10 Unusual Side Hustles That Are Completely Legal

Written by Millennial In debt on December 2, 2024

You know that “we listen and we don’t judge” social media trend going viral right now – we’re going to keep that same energy with this post!

If you are looking to earn additional income (especially during the holiday season) but you’re tired of the traditional side hustles often discussed like ridesharing or freelancing, these unconventional (but completely legal) ways to make money are for you.

Though these are weird side hustles (and I’m using that term with love), they can turn out to be fun, rewarding, and, most importantly, lucrative!

10 Weird Side Hustles That Are Completely Legal

weird side hustles

1. Rent Your Friendship

If you’ve ever moved to a new town and struggled to make friends OR if you are traveling SOLO and wanted to share some experiences with new people, RentAFriend would have come in really handy. If you enjoy being that person for others, while meeting new people and engaging in cool conversations, you can also earn $10 - $50 per hour to do so.

There is no romance involved, though I know there are definitely other things to be concerned / worried about with this side hustle. I recommend public activities like attending events, heading to a library, coffee shop or exploring your city.

Best part (besides meeting new people) is you get to set your own rates.

2. Sell Used Undergarments

🚨WE LISTEN + WE DON’T JUDGE 🚨

Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, there is a market for this particular side hustle. Pantydeal is the world’s largest marketplace for used underwear. When you sign up with the platform you are set up with a “panty shopping store” that will be shared / displayed with prospective buyers. The platform currently has over one million members and if you are intrigued you can also sell other worn items like socks, stockings, and lingerie.

You get to keep 100% of the profits and you set your own prices.

3. Sell Your Hair

If you have long healthy hair and don’t mind cutting it all off, this side hustle may be especially appealing to you. Using sites like HairSellon to connect you with buyers who are interested in real human hair for wigs or extensions can be extremely lucrative. The more aligned with the hair quality they are looking for, the more you can earn.

Obviously, the caveat with this particular side hustle is you can’t do it as often as you could do others. Once you cut your hair once, you’d have to wait for it to grow back before you could participate again.

Think of this side hustle as more of a quick hit of money rather than something that can be a long term sustainable source of income.

4. Answer Questions

Mindsumo and Just Answer are two platforms that pay you for your expertise.

Mindsumo is a bit more accessible to use because there are very few limitations. You answer questions posed by brands who are conducting market research. You share your creative ideas for the “challenges” and earn a part of the prize pot.

On the JustAnswer platform you set and control your rates / schedule but you do have to go through a vetting process to prove that you are in fact an expert with experience in the field you are providing answers for. JustAnswer also only requires / accepts answers from particular experts in specific industries.

5. Pet Waste Removal

This is for my people who don’t mind getting their hands a little dirty (no pun intended). You’d be surprised by how many people simply don’t want to clean up after their dogs and are more than willing to pay someone else to do it.

You can create a pet waste removal business for very little up front money. Typically you’d need waste removal items like a pooper scooper, buckets, and gloves to get started.

The best and easiest way to start getting clients is to post in your local buy/ sell/ trade groups on Facebook. Then you can expand into more social media marketing and paid advertising once you start to turn a profit.

It can be tricky to figure out how to price yourself especially when you are getting started – but I’m here to tell you that there are people earning $50,000 - $2,000,000 dollars a year (I 💩 not there is a man earning $2,000,000 with his pet waste removal business) I was just as surprised by that as you!

Do some market research on what people are charging in your area so that you can remain competitive and charge fairly.

6. Donate Sperm

If you are looking for some quick-ish money, you can donate your sperm at a cryobank. This isn’t going to make you rich, but this side hustle has a fairly low barrier to entry. What you earn for each donation will be based on what the cryobank is offering and their needs.

A quick Google search for “cryobank in “name of your city” will give you a ton of different options. You can usually expect to earn on average $15 - $40 dollars each time you donate.

7. Donating Plasma

A bit more lucrative donation option will be donating plasma Though this option does pay more than sperm donation, there are a few more barriers to entry. You must be in good health and will have to go through a medical screening to ensure you do not have any viruses that could potentially be passed through your blood. You will also have to share your medical history in detail to be approved.

BioLife is offering up to $800 for new donors and gives you the opportunity to search for donation centers local to your area. Donating Plasma walks you through the process and how to prepare while also helping you find local donation centers.

‼️Reminder that each donation center will set their own compensation rates.

8. Rent Out Space

I know you’re about to roll your eyes but I promise you I’m not telling you to become an AirBNB. I’m instead telling you to rent out your actual space to be used as storage.

You can use a platform like Neighbor to rent your garage, an empty room, a parking space …etc out like a storage unit.

You set your rates and can approve who can use your space. Neighbor provides ancillary insurance for your space so you don’t have to worry too much about a hostile renter.

9. Rent Your Backyard to Campers

I know my New Yorkers may not be the best group of people for this particular side hustle, but if you’ve got a backyard or unused outdoor space, you can rent it out to campers.

Platforms like Hipcamp allow property owners to offer camping experiences for a fee. It’s a great way to make money without doing much of anything. Of course you can expect to earn more if you live in a place with a large camping tourist population OR has great scenic views.

Again… a backyard in Brooklyn probably wouldn’t see much rental action compared to a backyard in the Catskills.

10. Be a Virtual Juror

If you’re one of the few people out there that actually enjoys jury duty, then this side hustle is going to be right up your judicial alley (pardon the dad joke)

As a virtual lawyer, you help lawyers prepare for trial by serving as an online juror. Websites like eJury or OnlineVerdict will pay you to review legal cases and provide feedback.

Though you won’t become rich being a virtual juror, you can expect to make a nice chunk of change. Most online jurors earn an average of $10–$60 per case, depending on its complexity.

Some of these weird (but mostly unconventional) side hustles may have made you clutch your pearls, BUT all 10 are legitimate and legal ways to earn extra income.
