So ... whenever I see something all over social media, particularly on Instagram I have to look further into it before I believe all of the hype. Lately, it seems the world of IG has taken a break from waist trainers and teeth whitening to dabble into something I'd never heard of before: Matcha. Consider me late to the party as always, but I had to find out for myself why everyone was ranting and raving about matcha tea, or matcha powder.

What Is Matcha? Matcha is finely ground powder that is grown and processed in Japan specially for green tea. That is all it is in the most basic form. It comes in different "grades" which are recommended for different purposes like cooking, blending, drinking...etc. So at its most basic level matcha is simply a green powder that is used for tea. Now why is everyone going crazy for it?
Matcha has been rumored to be filled with anti oxidants. Compared to green tea, when you drink matcha you are consuming the entire leaf therefore getting more nutrients and anti oxidants than if you were simply drinking green tea. Matcha is also a natural form of caffeine that provides three times the amount of caffeine found present in green tea. (Think of the coffee feeling without drinking coffee)
Health Benefits Of Matcha
It is important to also note that because you are consuming the entire leaf, even the most organic forms of matcha still contain lead. It is possible that you are consuming more lead than if you were consuming regular loose leaf steeped green tea. That is why it is recommended to only have once a day and not go be given to children. I'm not sure if I'm going to give Matcha a try just yet but I am considering it due to its many benefits. I've never seen matcha in store (I will check Trader Joes again this weekend) but I can purchase via Amazon when I see fit.
If you are looking to make your own Matcha based products/tea than you can get some organic matcha green tea powder from a health food store or from Amazon.
