Lace Front Vs Full Lace: Whats The Difference?

Written by Millennial In debt on October 14, 2014

Sometimes the nature hair community moves so fast that we forget that not everyone understands whats going on and it can be a bit confusing. Case in point whats the difference between a silk closure and a lace closure? No worries we've got you covered here! With protective styling season on the horizon it's time to clear up another mystery. The difference between a lace front wig and a full lace wig? It's really not as difficult to understand once you break down the word with pictures (I'm a visual learner ... so images work best for me)

Lets start with Lace Front Wigs:  A lace front wig is exactly what it sounds like. This wig has a sheer lace strictly in the front edges of the unit that are cut off just prior to be installed on your head. The lace front wig provides the illusion of a natural hair line. The base of a lace front wig isn't made of lace, but of a thicker material that is still comfortable/wearable.  Lace front wigs are often worn by many celebrities, but there are a few cons to this type of unit. With the baby hair effect, there can often be issues with the tape/glue used to adhere the wig to the front edge of the skin. For starters you are putting excessive amounts of stress on the perimeter of your edges if done too frequently. This can cause permanent damage if not handled correctly. The tape/glue can also interact with the skin and form a pulling type effect that will be a dead giveaway. Most times you can also see the glue if too much is installed We've seen this occur to many celebrities in the lime light as well.  Though a really good lace front wig can cost you anywhere from 300-400 dollars you can also find cheaper versions at a beauty supply shop, depending on the texture, quality, length, and style you are going for. Check out images below of lace front wigs the good and the bad!

Full Lace Wigs: Full lace wigs have a base that is made fully of lace unlike the lace front wig. This means full lace wigs are a bit more versatile than a lace front wig, because they can be worn in different hair styles. This puts full lace wigs at a higher price point than a lace front wig as well. A full lace wig covers the entire head and must be installed slightly different than a lace front wig that is only attached at the front edges of your head. It is best to wear a wig cap especially when installing a full lace wig, since it will be covering your entire head.

  2. I've never bought a lace wig, they look nice on other people. So this was helpful. I know which lace I want to purchase.
    Thank you.

    1. Hmm good question... I usually simply remove my wig at the gym and put it on after I've finished working out. But a breathable cap would probably be best if you are going to work out with it on.

  3. Thank you so much, this information truly helped me! I always wanted to know the difference between them when I buy wigs and now I do.

  4. I really enjoyed your article on how to protect your hair in the winter. Do you have any hair tips for hair loss from constant pulling or styles?

  5. Please help I usually get my hair weaved but now I've started modelling im not sure what to do with it I fancy getting the lace cause it looks more natural but I'm confused does the lace wigs stay on like the weave cause you know in case any one pulls it or such please advise me as I'm not a girly girl and don't have anyone to help me with this situation thanks for your time Harriet

  6. Hi

    Thanks for this information.

Do you need to use a glue on a full lace wig? Or the glue is only used for frontal lace only?

  7. okay so a lace front wig do you have to buy more hair and a full lace wig you don't need to buy hair that is why I am trying to figure out the different I brought a front lace wig an had to add hair and I don't want to do that so please tell me the different

  8. I can say a person should go for full lace wigs if he/she wants to create customizable shape by its own, since it is possible to make changes by cutting and altering. In case lace front wigs, it is not possible to do any kind alteration since there designed are manufactured permanently.
